BASIC FUNCTION:

Maintain efficient operation of all the individual food service equipment and systems throughout the main Central Kitchen and 43 school site kitchens in the Kent School District.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 

 

Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements.

 

E = ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Perform emergency repairs and preventative maintenance on NS kitchen equipment on a daily basis. This includes but is not limited to equipment listed: roll-in and reach-in refrigeration/freezers; combi, convection, rack and retherm ovens; and stove tops, slicers, food choppers, mixers, packaging equipment, pumps, dish machines and transport equipment.
  • Respond to alarms from the refrigeration monitoring system or KSD Security, which may occur during evenings or weekends.
  • Maintain the NS department’s data base for documenting work orders performed and preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment. Make recommendations on whether equipment should be repaired or replaced based on historical information maintained on each item.
  • Review specifications and make recommendations on purchase of new or replacement equipment.
  • Properly plan installation of equipment so required utility services are available and state and local building codes are followed. Obtain building permits for projects if required.
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of essential replacement parts to support efficient repair and minimal down time for equipment.
  • Monitor work areas for potential safety hazards and initiate corrective action to improve work environment.
  • Serve as a liaison with other District Maintenance Personnel to coordinate required utility connections and support for NS equipment installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Coordinate and facilitate work of outside vendors hired to perform work for NS department. This includes but is not limited to hood cleaning and confidence testing, fire protection equipment testing, major repair on warehouse refrigeration equipment, and installation and miscellaneous repair of food service equipment.
  • Serves as member of the Nutrition Service team of the district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.
  • Position reports directly to the Director of Nutrition Services. Position works closely with the Central Kitchen Manager and Assistant Manager on maintaining all central kitchen and school site equipment operational and with the department's Technology Specialist on maintaining accurate and up-to-date data base on all department equipment assets. Position is expected to maintain a good working relationship with all NS and District maintenance and operations staff.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of proper food and equipment safety standards and procedures that apply to facilities where food is prepared, produced, and served to the public.

  • Ability to work as a self-directed member of the NS staff, performing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient in the use of computer, phone, and email.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize time, materials, and equipment to work in an efficient, thorough manner.
  • Ability to repair and maintain commercial refrigeration equipment including large walk-in refrigerator/freezers operating with up to 30 HP compressor units. Knowledge and skill in properly handling and reclaiming refrigerants.
  • Ability to repair and maintain all types of gas and electric (up to 480 V, 3 phase) commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to weld with TIG or MIG or Stick weld & gas welding & brazing for metal fabrication and repairs
  • Ability to read technical specification, installation, and operational information.
  • Ability to read building blueprints or equipment wiring diagrams to troubleshoot electrical problems.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and organized data base system for managing work orders, preventative maintenance schedules and repair history of equipment.
  • Ability to work with high- and low-pressure steam related to steam cooking equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and establish and maintain good working relationships with all staff and customers.
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize the importance of projects and work under pressure.
  • Strong organizational, communication and customer service skills.

Education and Experience

 

High school diploma or G.E.D and previous special training & experience with refrigeration and kitchen equipment, and or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work.

 

Licensing and Certification

 

Required:

 

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Type I and Type II (or universal) Refrigerant Handlers Certificate
  • Valid Washington State journey level Electrical license EL01, EL07, or EL06A
  • Forklift safety training certificate.
  • Aerial Work Platform Certificate ANSI A92

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.

Must have valid driver’s license

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

Must demonstrate a successful level of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

 

Knowledge of:

 

Cook/chill production system including an ice chiller that provides cold water for cooling cooked products before storage.

 

Conveyor production packaging equipment.

 

Ability to:

 

Work with automated building EMS systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

The daily work is performed both inside and outside the buildings and on the building’s grounds. The work requires walking two to four miles a day. The work at times may be performed during night and adverse weather conditions in hot, cold, rain and snowy environments. The work is of a manual nature and requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, stand for long periods of time, perform repetitive motions such as twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling, over the shoulder and overhead lifting and use of far and near visual acuity.

 

Work will at times be performed on or around wet or slippery floors and with or near various machinery and cleaning chemicals. At times the work is of a strenuous nature and the employee must be able to lift or pack weights up to 50 pounds unassisted to shoulder height using proper personal lifting procedures. Weights over 50 pounds will be lifted with proper safety equipment and assistance. The work requires the employee to work around asbestos, chemicals, hazardous, materials, fumes, paints, dusts, electrical and mechanical equipment, confined spaces, and fluid hazards, which requires the employee to follow all proper federal, state, and local codes, safety policies and procedures and SDS date information and to wear proper personal protection equipment.

 

Position will have exposure to visual terminal when working with data base and district email. Work requires adherence to established dress guidelines, which includes provisions for safety. An employee may be required to work overtime on short notice and be available after hours if emergency repair work is required. Position may be required to work a swing shift or modified day shift to complete work or monitor work of outside vendor. Position must have the ability to remotely monitor refrigeration systems at the central kitchen via the internet.

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching, and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, computer keyboard, and other equipment necessary to complete the required duties.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
  • Visual ability to read, and to prepare/process documents and to monitor various services and personnel.
  • Sitting for extended periods.
  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Climbing, occasional use of stepladders.
  • Physical activity may be required, which could include moderate lifting.
