Northwood Middle School is located in the northeast corner of the Kent School District in Renton, Washington. Our school motto is Learners Today…Leaders Tomorrow. We are a school of approximately 650 7th and 8th grade students. We believe in high expectations for both students and staff. We take pride in a strong tradition of academic excellence. Using a collaborative data-driven approach to decision-making, we focus our academic and social/emotional interventions based on the needs of our students. We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities designed to enrich their academic experience as well as support their social and emotional development during their transitional years. We are proud of our strong music, STEM and athletics programs offered to students. We are also pleased to have a supportive community and strong partnership with our parents and PTSA.
ASSIGNMENT: Teaching choir to students in grades 7and 8. Responsible for directing school and regional performances and teaching the district curriculum.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is part of the KEA bargaining unit.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Appropriate Washington State certification and endorsements required and must be on file prior to beginning work.
- Ability to build a strong vocal music program and willing to work with musical productions as well as vocal presentations
- Must be willing to work flexible hours to plan/present evening performances
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A major in choral music
- Ability to demonstrate proper vocal techniques
- ELL endorsement
- Ability to exhibit multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the ability to communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community
- Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics
- Demonstrated strong communication skills
- Must be able to work cooperatively with a team of teachers
- Must maintain positive learning environment and have ability to relate to all students, parents and colleagues
- Must have excellent management skills
- Must be willing to share professional skills with other staff members
- Knowledge of differing student learning styles, cooperative learning and teaching students of varying abilities
- Excellent technology skills; can use and incorporate computers/technology into curriculum.
- Strong background in curriculum, instruction, and assessment
- Experience working with middle school students
- The willingness or qualifications of an applicant to coach or supervise activities and/or sports in addition to his/her teaching responsibilities will be considered
