Scenic Hill Elementary a dynamic and diverse public school in Kent, WA.

 

We have openings for full-time AmeriCorps-funded literacy tutors for the 2017-2018 school year.

 

If you are interested in gaining professional experience in schools and tutoring students in literacy full time, we are looking for you.

 

The Washington Reading Corps position requirements are a high school diploma, a desire to gain professional experience in schools, and the ability to commit to serving in a school for 40 hours a week for 10.5 months. This position provides a pre-tax stipend of $1202 a month through AmeriCorps, health insurance and possible child care if qualified.

 

Upon successful completion of service a $5,815 education award is also given that you can use for future college plans or to pay existing college loans. If you are over 55, you also have the option of transferring your education award to a family member.

AmeriCorps Candidate Eligibility Requirements  Selected member(s) should demonstrate the skills and commitment required to successfully serve in the position, serve 40 hours a week and meet the 1,700 minimum hour requirement for a full 10.5 month term of service.?

At a minimum, the following criteria must be met: 

1. Be a United States citizen or lawful permanent resident (must submit proof as defined by CNCS regulation) 

2. Be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of service (17 years of age with signed parental consent form) 

3. Members in tutoring positions must have a high school diploma

4. Pass required National Service Criminal History Checks 

5. Not be listed on the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR)

What is the Washington Reading Corps?  In 1998, our Washington Reading Corps program was created through a collaboration between the Governor's office, the Washington State Commission for National and Community Service, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Washington Service Corps. This program solely focuses on improving literacy in children and students, placing AmeriCorps members in schools and early learning centers who provide tutoring to struggling readers.
