Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work on widely varied maintenance work orders involving the care and improvement of plumbing facilities, cold and hot water supply, sewer systems, gas supply, lawn sprinkler, fire main and sprinkler systems, surface water drains, and compressed air supply systems.  Included are institutional or plant-type hot water tanks, volume tanks, flush valves, various timed faucets, anti-siphon valves, kitchen faucets, drinking fountains, mixing valves, pressure regulating valves, backflow preventer valves, showers, liquid soap systems, septic tanks, and associated pumps.  The employee provides guidance and assistance to less experienced maintenance workers.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

 

Performs pipe fitting of iron (galvanized, black, wrought, cast, acid resistant cast), copper, brass, stainless steel, plastic, and special alloys; installs, adjusts, and maintains fittings, fixtures, and appliances; installs all types of piping insulation; uses various anchors, hangers, straps, fasteners, and adhesives common to the trade.

 

Supports and follows energy and resource conservation measures.

 

Performs layout with attention to structural factors, material to be handled, grades, volume, pressure requirements, safety, governing codes, and acceptable trade practices.

 

Reads blueprints and schematics as required to perform installation and maintenance of plumbing services.

 

Performs commissioning on new mechanical systems.

 

Performs high work on staging, ladders, and scaffolding as required; performs strenuous manual labor as required for climbing, overhead work, excavation, and backfilling.

 

Adjusts and operates pipe cutting and threading machines, pipe benders, sewer jetter and snake machines, and torches.

 

Practices all safety requirements associated with the plumbing trade.

 

Estimates labor and materials costs from rough work requests and oral instructions.

 

Operates trucks up to five tons as necessary in the performance of the trade.

 

Directs helpers, laborers and trainee apprentices as required.

 

Maintains records incidental to the preventive maintenance program for all plumbing systems in the school district.

 

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

 

Serves as member of the maintenance team of the district; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as assigned.

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.  Works with other maintenance crafts personnel as required.  Reviews plans with district administrators when necessary.  Works with King County Health Department regarding code requirements.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

The daily work is performed both inside and outside the buildings and on the building’s grounds.  The work requires walking two to six miles a day.  The work at times will be performed during night and adverse weather conditions in hot, cold, rainy, and snowy environments.  The work is of a manual nature and requires the ability to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, crawl, stand for long periods of time, twist, reach, push, and pull, and use far and near visual acuity.  At times the work is of a strenuous nature and the employee must be able to lift or pack weights up to 50 pounds unassisted to shoulder height using proper personal lifting procedures.  Weights over 50 pounds will be lifted with proper safety equipment and assistance.  The work requires the employee to work around asbestos, chemicals, hazardous materials, fumes, paints, dusts, electrical and mechanical equipment, confined space, and fluid hazards, which requires the employee to follow all proper federal, state, and local codes, safety policies and procedures, and SDS data information and to wear proper personal protection equipment.  Work requires adherence to established dress guidelines, which includes provisions for safety.  An employee may be required to work overtime or other shifts on short notice.  Some positions may be required to work a swing shift or modified day shift.  Regular attendance is required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Must demonstrate a successful level of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

Considerable knowledge of plumbing systems and component maintenance, installation, and repair.

Knowledge of electronic communication, computerized work order systems, and Windows.

Knowledge of plumbing theories, principles, and application.

Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.

Knowledge of proper safety precautions and procedures when working around plumbing systems and devices.

Knowledge of federal, state, and local standards and codes relating to plumbing.

Ability to follow technical instructions, to plan, organize, and order materials with little supervision.

Ability to troubleshoot plumbing problems and perform corrective maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and components.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of all tools and equipment of the plumbing trade.

 

Education and Experience

 

Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and four years experience working in the plumbing trade; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work.

 

Licensing and Certification

 

Valid Washington State journey level plumber’s license.

Valid Washington State back flow assembly tester certification or the ability to obtain one.

Valid Washington State driver’s license.

 

EVALUATION:

 

Evaluation responsibilities are assigned to the Maintenance Supervisor.
