ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is part of the KAP bargaining unit.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Paraeducator guest staff replace regular employees who are absent.  Under the direction of a building administrator or certificated teacher, the Paraeducator supervises and instructs individual and /or small groups of students within a classroom setting. Guest Paraeducators will receive a variety of assignments. Guest staff are expected to be available on a day-to-day, on-call basis, any day of the week, Monday through Friday.  An automated online system is used to arrange assignments in advance. Early morning phone calls may occur starting as early as 5:00 am.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: 

  • Maintain positive learning environment and have ability to relate to all students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Duties may include small group specially designed instruction, one-on-one instruction with a student, and assessing and recording student progress while managing resources, or other tasks as required by the teacher.
  • Assist in the delivery of education programs and testing materials related to students including, but not limited to, general education, special education, Title, LAP and Multilingual education.
  • Utilize escalation prevention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Interact with students and maintain awareness of individual student emotional and physical needs, discussing identified concerns with classroom teacher or other staff members.
  • Present and implement behavior management programs as directed by the teacher, including responding to assist with eloping students.
  • Address student(s) educational goals and personal needs, such as feeding, dressing, diapering, toileting, hygiene, or other medical needs as needed.
  • Assignments may be in a regular general education classroom or a special education classroom. 
  • Complete and maintain relevant records, forms of documentation and collect relevant student data.
  • Assist student(s) & teachers as needed.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Proof of High School completion.Copy of diploma or transcripts must be on file at the start of employment. College transcripts that specifically state completion of high school will be accepted in lieu of high school diploma.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to have effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public and ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound, independent judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
  • Must be able to demonstrate flexibility in working with students and staff members in a variety of classroom settings and locations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public and ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision and follow a provided lesson plan.
  • Ability to manage students’ physical needs, including the ability to walk, climb stairs, sit, squat, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, reach and lift.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written expression in English.
  • Comply with all Board policies and procedures.
  • Background check through Washington State Patrol, as required by RCW 43.43.830. Fees apply.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Availability to work all hours of a student day starting as early as 7:00 am until 4:30 pm on any day of the school week.
  • Flexible and willing to adjust schedules on short notice.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other assistive technology.
  • Experience working with students with special needs/high needs, including students with behavior disorders.
  • Candidates must have the ability or willingness to provide medical or health services such as diapering, toileting, feeding, tube-feeding, and assisting students with other activities involving self-care should the need arise.
  • Ability to lift and transfer students in and out of wheelchairs, if needed.
  • Physically strong enough to assist with restraint, lifting, and transferring students to a safe place.
  • Must not be insulted or offended by students swearing and using inappropriate language.
  • Demonstrated evidence of promptness and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and the specific school demographics.
  • Ability to show multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity and communicate effectively with all cultural groups in the school community.
  • Ability to organize ideas, time, and materials to accomplish goals.
