BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the school site’s AVID coordinator, the AVID tutor will use specific teaching methodologies and materials to work with AVID students. The AVID tutor works with assigned students in study groups that are subject-area specific and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress toward college and career readiness.  The AVID tutor assists the students achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups. The AVID tutor uses Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques to help the students come up with the answers to their questions on their own and by working with fellow students. 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Assists school personnel in achieving district objectives and carrying out policies established by the Board of Directors in Successfully Preparing All Students for Their Futures. 
 
Facilitates tutorial sessions that utilize AVID instructional structure and methodology. 
 
Learns and utilizse other AVID methodologies and practices. 
 
Takes an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of AVID students. 
 
Supports AVID students in the successful completion of high school and college eligibility requirements. 
 
Provides academic support for AVID students who are taking a variety of rigorous courses. 
 
Serves as a role model and mentor, and sets an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students. 
 
Promotes collaborative learning within the AVID classroom.  
 
Reinforces the idea that learning extends beyond the classroom and is a lifelong pursuit.  
 
Participates in college field trips designed to prepare AVID students for post-secondary pursuits.
 
Evaluates AVID student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.  
 
Creates and maintains a positive AVID classroom atmosphere.  
 
Acknowledges the individuality of all AVID students and assists them in developing academic and personal pride, as well as self-advocacy skills.  
 
Promotes appreciation for cultural, linguistic, and racial diversity among students. 
 
Communicates regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern. 
 
Assists the AVID coordinator and AVID teachers as assigned.  
 
Communicates regularly with students, colleagues, and district staff in a positive and constructive manner.  
 
Provides assistance to other staff, as needed. 
 
Maintains adequate and careful records as required by the AVID site coordinator(s) and district. 
 
Provides for the care of school property and appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and utilities. 
 
Performs all other duties as assigned. 
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Ø  High School Diploma (or equivalent)
Ø  Enrolled in two or four-year college program of study or AA degree.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Ø  Bachelor’s degree.
Ø  Bilingual (oral and written; academic fluency).
Ø  Proven successful experience in an ethnically diverse public school district.
Ø  Proven successful experience working with middle and/or high school students in a school setting, especially in math, science, and/or English.
 
Employment eligibility may include fingerprints, health (TB), and/or other employment clearance.

Ø  Effective facilitation skills for various professional interactions with students and adults.
Ø  Record-keeping techniques.
Ø  District organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
Ø  Educational and business technology programs, procedures and methods, computer equipment, and computer software necessary to perform required duties.
Ø  Oral and written communication skills, including English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, composition, and skills in mathematics.

Ø  Daily activity is performed in a school/classroom environment.

Physical demands:
Ø  Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching, and reaching to retrieve and maintain files and records.
Ø  Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
   Ø  Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, computer keyboard, and other equipment necessary to complete the required duties.
Ø  Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.
Ø  Visual ability to read, and to prepare/process documents and to monitor various services and personnel.
   Ø  Sitting for extended periods.
   Ø  Standing for extended periods.
   Ø  Walking over rough or uneven surfaces.
Ø  Climbing, occasional use of stepladders.
Ø  Physical activity may be required, which could include moderate lifting and storing of materials and equipment.
